Bad Gastein was traditionally a spa town and is still well known across the world as one of the top health and wellness resorts in Europe. In the past, the upper crust of society, including emperors, came to Bad Gastein to enjoy peace and quiet. These days the town has opened itself up so that visitors can experience the benefits of the spa. There are many spa centres in the town and some of the top hotels will have their own spa.
Other top winter sports activities include ice skating and curling. Tobogganing is also available as well as sleigh rides. These activities give you a break from skiing, whilst still taking advantage of the snowy conditions in the Austrian Alps. The more adventurous can try ice climbing or snow shoe walking.
Adventure seekers will find plenty to do in Bad Gastein, besides skiing. Paragliding is very popular in the area and is a great way to view the stunning surroundings. Bad Gastein is also a great place to go horse riding. A local farm arranges treks that last between a few hours and several days.
The resort has a range of accommodation available to suit almost any budget. There are many inexpensive chalets and hotels available suitable for couples or families. At the other end of the scale, Bad Gastein caters for the luxury market with some fantastic stylish 4 or 5 star hotels that have the resources to cater for your every need. Those with mid range budgets can choose from elegant hotels, charming lodges, modern or traditional hotels.
Bad Gastein has a wide selection of eateries for visitors to choose from. Restaurants tend to serve traditional authentic Austrian specialities and have a warm, friendly atmosphere. The restaurants in this area cater to all budgets. Although there are many inexpensive restaurants, there are also some with a luxury atmosphere for those who want to really treat themselves.
Salzburg is the closest airport. This takes approximately 2 hours in the car. There are many transfers available that will take you directly from the airport to your accommodation. Alternatively, you can get a taxi, or hire a car.
Overall, Bad Gastein is a great ski resort suitable for all levels of ability. The resort is particularly suited to those who want a choice of nightlife, restaurants and a variety of local amenities. We have given Bad Gastein 4 stars for intermediate skiers. The resort also caters well for experts with its off-piste opportunities and has therefore gained 3 stars. For beginners, we have awarded the resort 2 stars, as the slopes are more suitable for the experienced skier.
