Maria Alm has got to be one the prettiest resorts in Austria, its like a winter wonderland, with beautiful little timber houses and a gorgeous river running through the town centre. Maria Alm is one of three resorts that make up the Hochkonig Ski Circuit and offers over 150 kilometres of well groomed piste offering runs for all levels of ability and at an affordable budget too.
One of the main attractions of this resort is the fact that most accommodations offer a ski in, ski out option, with lifts very close by or just slightly down the valley. The ski area is vast but to top it all the snow record is enviable, with long seasons and plenty natural snowfall. British skiers have just recently discovered this amazing resort and its now become a firm favourite with all. The queues are short and the piste are uncrowded too.
Beginners have a choice of plenty nursery slopes and over 40 blues to improve on and there is an excellent ski school in town too, and it’s becoming popular with families, due to the excellent creches and kindergarten facilities. Many hotels offer good childcare options too.
Intermediate skiers have an excellent selection of reds and some difficult blues, and of course the Kaprun Glacier is less than 15 kilometres away too, opening doors for even more great runs. Also resorts of Saalbach, Hinterglem and Leogang offer state of the art lift systems and a multitude of exciting runs and ski opportunities.
Advanced skiers will enjoy the immense Ski Amade area, all covered on the all area lift pass, offering steep verticals, chutes and mogul runs, it really is exciting and the off piste opportunities are amazing.
Apres ski in Maria Alm is as varied or a quiet as you want it to be. There are countless bars and restaurants offering a knees up if you have the energy, but there are plenty places offering a more relaxed setting, offering warm cosy atmospheres.
Non skiers have a good choice of activities to including swimming, torch-lit walks, bowling, horse drawn sleigh rides, tobogganing and spa facilities too.
There is a good selection of mountain restaurants all offering traditional Austrian hospitality and finish off this wonderful resort. And don’t forget that this resort is only an hours drive from the beautiful city of Salzburg, an absolute must for an afternoon out, with its beautiful historical buildings and museums.
