Oberau is a beautiful, traditional Austrian village, best known as the sister resort to Neiderau and of course situated in the breathtaking Wildschonau Valley, offering an excellent snow record, finely groomed, tree lined pistes and with a nice short transfers from Innsbruck airport.
This traditional ski resort, with historic and picturesque farmhouses offer beautiful wild scenery, not seen in many other areas, with a magnificent church and fine buildings, makes this a perfect destination for non skiers too.
Oberau is probably one of the best resorts for beginners, with lots of gentle nursery slopes and some nice easy blues for the more adventurous. Also families return here year after year with the crèches and kindergarten in the centre of the village and many hotels offering great childcare facilities makes it a good all round area for a first ski holiday.
For intermediate skiers, the best area is neighbouring Neiderau, taking place on the Markbachjoch gondola runs or on the nearby Lanerkopfl chairlift, giving access to some amazing reds and more difficult blues.
There are also some long 7 and 9 kilometres runs taking you from peak to village with many little mountain restaurants on-route for a little rest.
Advanced skiers have plenty difficult and challenging runs in Oberau and Neiderau and all covered on the same lift pass and the larger Ski Welt Area is only 7 kilometres away and daily transport is offered from the villages at a very reasonable rate. Oberau is the only resort in the area to offer night skiing too.
Oberau and Neiderau is a brilliant place for snowboarders with a snowboard park, a race run and a board area, and again only 7 kilometres from The Famous ski welt area opening more doors to some fabulous boarding opportunities.
Apres ski in Oberau is varied, lively or quiet but very traditional in feel and nothing nicer than old fashioned Tyrol hospitality.
For the non skiers in your party, there is a full and varied entertainment programme including horse drawn sleigh rides, day excursions to Salzburg and Innsbruck. Fabulous for Nordic walking and snow shoeing too, especially as the scenery is so beautiful with tree lined tracks.
They also offer you the chance to try high rope walking or tobogganing too. The villages are host to 2 museums and a beautiful art gallery too, so there really is something for everyone.
