Telfes Ski Holidays

The small town of Telfes is in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, east of Salzburg and is famous for The Sound of Music. The town gets its name from Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg and Sankt Wolfgang im Salzkammergut is its full Austrian name. The first church was erected by Saint Wolfgang close to the Wolfgangsee in 976.

The popular skiing region of Stubai Valley includes the picturesque village of Telfes, just off the Bremner Pass. The Stubai Valley is made up of several villages which include Telfes, Neustift, Fulpmes, Meiders and Schonberg and each of these villages has its own ski resort. Telfes has a glacier high altitude and is also a guaranteed snow location. The Stubai Valley is a great winter holiday getaway, especially with the summer holidays almost drawing to a close. You cannot fail to notice the scenery on arrival, it is nothing short of breathtaking. The tranquil and peaceful landscape will help you to unwind and relax in order for you to enjoy your skiing trip. As the season changes and preparation for the cooler weather starts, thoughts of snow and winter fun are very appealing. Skiing is a lovely way to spend your winter holiday, making the most of the piste and the amazing picturesque vista.

There are many skiing resorts throughout Austria, each with their own appeal for beginners right through to advanced skiers. Each area has its own special areas of interest and local facilities on offer to suit the needs of couples, groups and families.

The skiing resort of Telfes, is a lovely Tirolean village with fourteen hundred inhabitants and stands at 987 metres above sea level. Telfes is situated in the Stubaital around eleven kms south of Innsbruck. The nearest airport to Telfes is Innsbruck, with a transfer time of thirty minutes to the village. This is a picture book village and is the sunniest area in the Stubai Valley, boasting access to the imposing Stubai Glacier at the end of the valley, which may be reached via cable car or ski bus. Skiing is permitted on the Stubai Glacier using the purchased ski pass. The glacier is a huge attraction and will give immense pleasure to all skiers, except possibly for the complete novice. Apart from the guaranteed snow, the Stubai Glacier offers some unrivalled views and is an absolute delight to behold, this is in addition to the excellent skiing experience it provides. The resort has a height of 1,000m and provides multi-area skiing which is suitable for all abilities. Telfes has perfect snow conditions and there is a total of 140kms of skiing area.

Ski slopes above Telfes and the surrounding villages are also popular with skiers. These are useful for intermediate and beginner skiers who want to brush up their skills under the watchful eye of skiing instructors. The Telfes resort is of moderate size and is a part of the Stubai Valley ski area which covers around 100kms of cross country skiing. As there is a variety of choice of slopes close to Telfes, it is a perfect destination for skiers of varying abilities in couples, groups or families.

Activities

Telfes has a lot of additional facilities on offer apart from the obvious. These other activities include a tennis camp, open air baths and sauna, European Birds of Prey Park, an indoor swimming pool and exhilarating walks across the fields of the village. Perhaps you might enjoy walking, hiking or climbing through the limestone formations referred to as the ‘Dolomites of the North’ at Kalkkogel or revel in the Schlick 2000 area of the Stubai Valley. Para-gliders and hand-glider enthusiasts love what the Schlick 2000 ski area has to offer them too. Mountain bikers can also enjoy the routes around the area including the Kreitheralm.

Another popular activity in Telfes is tobogganing, also further amenities for the resort includes an alpine train or local bus service into Innsbruck, as well as banks and cash machines, a supermarket and souvenir shops. The apres ski scene consists of traditional Austrian entertainment and bars. Overall, the atmosphere is laid back and mainly hotel based.

Accommodation

The Hotel Oberhofer has a highly commended reputation for its standard of cuisine, which is not bad for the smallest four star hotel in Austria. The Hotel Oberhofer provides a free shuttle bus making access to the Schlick 2000 skiing area straightforward. The hotel is located in an elevated position close to the village of Telfes. The cuisine is of Michelin star quality and there is an impressive six hundred square metre wellness area available for use, including saunas, steam and massage areas, fitness room and water and juice bar.

Telfes has an overall four star rating for its skiing facilities, which are mostly suitable for beginners and intermediates. The apres ski facilities and additional activities on offer are very good for a small ski resort.
