Bulgaria is a wonderful ski destination, especially suited for beginners and improver’s, although not home to the most extensive of ski areas, you wont beat it for value for money. The overall package is definitely great value for money with the cheapest Learn to Ski packs in Europe.
Skiing holidays are not just about booking your flights and accommodation and transfers, there are many things to add to the price unless you have skied before. Firstly, you need to make sure you have a good selection of clothing, being warm and dry is a must on a ski holiday. You will need Salopettes and a waterproof jacket, and plenty layers of cotton under garments, i.e. thermal longjohns and tops and maybe a fleece. Warm, waterproof gloves and hat are important and we’d always recommend a helmet for your own protection, the soft white stuff can be pretty hard when you land on it from high speeds.
Then of course you will need ski boots, ski’s and a lift pass so that you can experience the various runs on offer. Most tour operators will happily pre arrange these for you prior to departure and as we said , the prices are definitely cheaper than other European resorts. We’d also recommend a course of tuition, especially for families and beginners, and maybe a refresher course if you have skied once or twice before. These can all be added to you original package price.
Bulgaria has an extensive choice when it comes to accommodation and you should take a good look to see what suits everyone in your group. Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo have many options and suits all tastes and budgets.
Firstly there are self catering apartments, this usually consists of studios sleeping up to 2 or 3 people with kitchen, wc and bathroom, or there are larger options of 1 and 2 bedroomed apartments sleeping up to 4, 6 and 8 people, again with kitchen, bathroom and WC.
Then you have your hotels, which can range from a basic 2* through to 5* depending on your personal choice. Hotel rooms usually sleep up to 3 people and have no cooking facilities, but do have bathroom and WC.
The board basis varies with every property, some hotels offer bed and breakfast, some half board and some all inclusive. And finally there are catered chalets, which tend to be most popular, with a homely feeling, and they come in different sizes too, great when you have a group of people, many sleep 8 to 18 people, and you have your meals prepared for you from your chalet maid and wine is generally included with your evening meal. She also does your housekeeping, perfect!
Lastly, in a package holiday, we’d recommend a good insurance policy, skiing is classed as a dangerous sport and you must make sure you are covered from the minute you confirm your holiday until the minute you return, and make sure you are covered for all eventualities, i.e. no snow, repatriation, flight delay and personal liability. A fully comprehensive ski insurance is the best.
There are many ways of booking a package holiday and many tour operators offer some fantastic deals for Bulgaria, and we offer some exclusive discounts too.
