The ideal family choice in a quaint village setting within The Three Valleys. Resort Height: 1400m (4,593ft) with a skiing range of 1300m (4265ft) – 3200m (10499ft).
La Tania is a relatively new resort which was originally built for the 1992 Winter Olympics held in the close by town of Albertville. The design had a strong emphasis on the use of natural materials which is evident in the large number of wooden and stone apartment buildings and timber framed chalets you can see throughout the resort.
It sits between the larger ski resorts of Meribel and Courchevel and when you stay in La Tania, not only do you gain easy links to both of these popular ski resorts, you have access to the largest skiing territory in the world.
The famous Three Valleys, or Les Trois Vallees as it is locally known, provides the avid skier with over 600km worth of ski slopes to choose from, along with an efficient network of 183 ski lifts of different styles for easy transportation across this vast skiing domain.
Nestled within a beautiful pine tree forest, La Tania looks like a typical Christmas card setting with stunning views and superb scenery. The area is much quieter and more compact than its bustling neighbours, Meribel and Courchevel and it has a lovely quaint village feel to it. Predominantly it remains a traffic free resort and the good choice of red, blue and green pistes, which run back into La Tania, take you down through the beautiful pine forest and enable you to ski directly into the resort.
Given its quieter nature and the fact that most accommodation is conveniently located close to the main gondola and ski schools, La Tania makes a good choice for families who ideally need the convenience of a ‘doorstep skiing’ style of resort.
Thanks to the number of snow cannons in La Tania, snow conditions on the runs into the resort remain are in good condition right through to the late skiing season. From La Tania you can easily access the massive range of ski terrain that encompasses the Three Valleys.
Covering all skiing abilities, this area provides over 180 ‘Easy’ runs, close to 120 ‘Intermediate’ runs and 33 runs that are rated as ‘Difficult’. So it is fair to say that everyone is well catered for in the Three Valleys.
In La Tania there is a blue straight run which takes you down into the resort through the forest. A wider red run with a steady slope takes you right back to the gondola station at the bottom of the resort and there is a newer green run based at the top gondola station, which ambles through the forest into the resort. For absolute beginners, there is a drag lift and a great short run to practice on that is right in the heart of La Tania.
When you are ready for a change of scenery, do not forget that you are just a short hop away from both Meribel or Courchevel 1850. Excellent lift connections mean you are never more than just 2 lift rides away from these resorts, with a whole range of new pistes to try out. For the more advanced skier, you could push your Three Valleys experience to the max and take a day’s skiing trip out to Val Thorens – Europe’s highest skiing village at 2300m (7546ft)
Whilst La Tania does not have the same level of hustle and bustle as neighbouring Courchevel and Mribel, it still has a great choice of good value bars and restaurants. ‘Le Ski Lodge’ is the main bar in the area with a great range of beers and drinks on offer, along with happy hours, regular live music and Satellite TV for all your main sporting events on the big screen. If you fancy a change of nightlife, you can always head over to Courchevel for the evening, which is just a short ride away in a Taxi.
La Tania has a good choice of restaurants but the ‘Ski Lodge’ is the most popular, it serves great lunches and is home to a lively atmosphere at dinner in the evenings.
Take a visit to Courchevel for some snow shoe walking, skating or tobogganing if you would like a break from all that skiing.
