Poiana Brasov in Romania is rapidly becoming renowned as Eastern Europe’s best ski resort, and famous for its long ski season and excellent snow reports. Set some 1800 metres above sea level, as high as some of France and Austria’s resorts makes it an excellent choice for skiers looking for a challenge. And obviously this is a brilliant choice for people on a budget, know known as the “New Bulgaria” with its competitive room rates and more and more airlines offering flights to Romania, its rapidly increasing in its International clientèle.
Pioana Brasov is a purpose built resort, built sympathetically to blend in with the beautiful surrounding hillside of the formidable Carpathian mountains. There is a massive expanse of pine trees and tree lined slopes to enjoy, not to mention one of Europe’s newest lift systems, recently upgraded to take you higher and higher into the skies and experience some of the most beautiful virgin snow.
Beginners are so well catered for here, along with families, not only do they have the biggest choice of wide, beautiful tree lined slopes, there is a selection off well maintained flood lit nursery slopes and an excellent choice of easy, long blues at the top of the mountain. Then we must mention the ski school, with some of the best English speaking instructors, a varied choice of tuition and times available, not to mention some of the best kiddies childcare too.
Intermediate skiers have an excellent choice of blues and reds to choose from, and some nice long runs to the summit, down through some magnificent, picture postcard scenery.
Advanced skiers only have a couple of challenging black runs, however the off piste opportunities are fantastic.
Snowboarders will enjoy the wide cruisy blues and reds available to them, and although there is not a massive choice of snow-parks, it is a fantastic area for first timers as lessons are cheap and lifts are uncrowded.
