So why would you pick Obergurgl in Austria for your last minute ski holiday??? Well it could be the short transfer, the high altitude skiing, the relaxing night-life and the beautiful tree lined village, that’s not to mention the fact that you can get here from most UK airports and at very reasonable prices too.
Obergurgl and Hochgurgl share one of the highest ski areas in Austria, it is set in the vast Otz Valley and the slopes extend up to 3000 metres, resulting in reliable ski conditions all season round, it is one of the few areas you can ski in decent snow conditions early and late on in the season.
The village here remains pretty much unspoiled with a charming family ambience and a great selection of traditional apres ski bars and beer kellers. Maybe you should head to the spectacular “top Mountain Star” restaurant for some of the fabulous breathtaking views. The village centre is pretty much car free, making it safe, quiet and traditionally Austrian, truly a beautiful place to experience.
Beginners are well catered for here, as are families with children, there is a great selection of wide gently sloping runs, where you can ski straight back into the village, and a good selection of lifts to take you a bit further afield once your find your feet. The ski school here offers every level of tuition and there is a kindergarten and crèche should you require it.
This resort is perfect for intermediate skiers, both ski areas are linked by the gondola and there’s over 110 kilometres of runs to choose from, and a few challenging blacks too for the more advanced skier. Obergurgl is also famous for its night-time skiing, making is a little bit different from the usual ski resorts around Europe.
Snowboarders wont be disappointed either, there is plenty of piste for them to choose from as well as a snow park and a half pipe.
Obergurgl does not promise to be one of the liveliest resorts, though live music is common in some of the bars in the town centre. This resort attracts a following of loyal skiers and families looking for a cheap late deal that wont be hard on the pocket or disappoint any level of skier.
You can always pick up a deal to Obergurgl as its got one of the longest seasons in Europe and typical prices start from £319 for self catering for a week. Watch out also for some of the operators deals, some offer free kiddies lift passes.
